2026 World Heritage Joseon Royal Tombs Festival

Set at Yungneung, where Crown Prince Sado and Lady Hyegyeong rest, this musical portrays the generational love and grief of a royal family and King Jeongjo's lifelong quest to mend those scars. Spanning 60 minutes, the musical drama weaves the tragedy of three generations, from Jeongjo's birth and the tragic demise of his father, Crown Prince Sado, to young Jeongjo's anguish as a witness, and his eventual ascension as king who restores his father's honor and hosts a grand royal banquet in Hwaseong for his mother.

The central motif is the peach blossom, representing the childhood promise shared between young Jeongjo and his mother, as well as the enduring memory of those who survived the tragedy. Today, 300 years later, the story of a family who loved dearly yet remained painfully distant comes alive once more at Yungneung.

● Synopsis

In 1752, at Gyeongchunjeon Pavilion in Changgyeonggung Palace, Yi San, the future King Jeongjo, is born. Holding her newborn son, Lady Hyegyeong vows to protect him at all costs amidst the deepening rift between King Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado. However, the tragic tension between a father demanding absolute kingship and a son longing for paternal acceptance reaches a point of no return. As Sado falls into madness and violence, King Yeongjo orders his son to commit suicide and, ignoring young Jeongjo's desperate pleas, ultimately locks Sado in a wooden rice chest.

Having witnessed his father's tragic death, Jeongjo survives to become king. He proudly proclaims his lineage as the grandson of Yeongjo, son of Sado, and son of Lady Hyegyeong, dedicating himself to restoring his father's honor. On his mother's 60th birthday, he hosts a magnificent royal banquet in Hwaseong and presents her with peach blossoms, fulfilling his long-held childhood promise.

Prologue.	A Royal Baby Born in Changgyeonggung Palace
	A Munseokin, the civil official stone statue that has guarded Yungneung for centuries, guides the audience back 300 years to Changgyeonggung Palace. The year is 1752, and the tale begins with the birth of Royal Grandson Yi San, the future King Jeongjo.
Scene 1	When I Carried You
	Holding newborn Jeongjo, Lady Hyegyeong worries about her son's uncertain fate and vows to protect him. Just as she asks young Jeongjo to gift her a bouquet of peach blossoms when he becomes king, alarming news arrives that Crown Prince Sado has headed toward Munjeongjeon Pavilion with a drawn sword.
Scene 2	Crown Prince Sado
	Plagued by madness and auditory hallucinations amidst rising court accusations, Prince Sado collides head-on with King Yeongjo. King Yeongjo commands his son to end his own life and, despite young Jeongjo's tearful pleas, orders the wooden rice chest brought forth. Sado steps inside the chest himself, sealing the tragedy.
Scene 3	Father and Son
	Young Jeongjo secretly brings water to his father trapped inside the rice chest. Facing death, Sado speaks to King Yeongjo one last time, pleading "Please save San" in exchange for his own life before breathing his last.
Scene 4	Reminiscence
	Time shifts back to Sado's childhood. Excelling in studies and martial arts, Sado longed for nothing more than his father's warmth, praise, and recognition, rather than the throne itself. Yet under Yeongjo's crushing expectations and stern reprimands, the divide between father and son grows ever wider.
Scene 5	Thinking of It, My Heart Aches
	The lingering grief of King Yeongjo, Lady Hyegyeong, and young Jeongjo after Sado's death takes center stage. Through the existential anguish of a father who killed his son, a son killed by his father, and the family left behind, one poignant phrase remains: "Thinking of it, my heart aches."
Scene 6	The Royal Banquet
	Having survived to ascend the throne, King Jeongjo restores his father's honor and hosts a magnificent royal banquet in Hwaseong for his mother's 60th birthday. That evening, he presents her with peach blossoms, fulfilling his childhood vow.
Scene 7	Night of the Peach Blossoms
	As the banquet concludes, sixty-year-old Lady Hyegyeong reflects on her eventful life beneath the peach blossoms. Finally, the 300-year barrier of time dissolves, bringing them together once more in eternal reunion.
